PokeRogue takes Pokémon battles and puts them into a very different kind of game. There are no long walks through towns or routes here. You pick a team, enter a run, and keep fighting through one battle after another. If the whole team goes down, that's it for the run, and you start again from wave 1.
Picking the Starting Team
Classic Mode gives you 10 points for your starting team. Every Pokémon has a cost, so you can't simply fill the team with the strongest choices available. A Legendary might take a huge chunk of the budget, while weaker Pokémon can cost only a couple of points. Your collection grows as you play. Catch Pokémon during runs or use tickets from milestones to hatch Eggs and unlock more starters. Catching something you already have isn't useless either, since duplicates give you Candies for that species.
The Next Fight Is Always Waiting
A Classic run has 200 waves, and each floor brings another fight. Wild Pokémon can be caught, while trainer battles are more about putting your team's different strengths together. Every tenth wave has something tougher waiting, such as a Boss Pokémon or Gym Leader. The setting also changes every ten waves. Your team gets healed before moving into the next biome, where you'll run into a different selection of Pokémon. One thing that makes PokeRogue interesting is that stat boosts can stick around through wild battles. A move such as Nasty Plot or Torch Song can make a Pokémon much stronger if you get the chance to build it up.
Don't Waste Your Money
After battles, the shop gives you a chance to spend PokeDollars. Potions, Revives, Held Items, and other useful gear can keep a run going. You can also find special items such as Mega Stones, Dynamax Bands, and Tera Orbs. There are plenty of little bonuses to discover too. A starter with PokéruS gives the team extra EXP, while Candies can eventually lower starting costs or unlock passive abilities. That constant mix of team building, random upgrades, catching, and trying again is what keeps each run from feeling exactly the same.
